Battle of Monte Cassino: Polish second assault broke German lines

Units of the 2nd Polish Corps under Gen. Władysław Anders attacked Monte Cassino on May 11, 1944, but the first assault failed to break German positions. Only the second attack, launched days later, succeeded. James Holland describes the fighting in "Monte Cassino 1944. Five Months," noting soldiers faced extreme conditions—Holland writes the choice was often simple: kill or be killed.
