Psilocybin may protect brain from head injuries, research suggests

New research published in "Communications Biology" suggests psilocybin – the active ingredient in hallucinogenic mushrooms – may protect rats' brains from damage after mild blows to the head. Even minor head injuries that don't meet concussion criteria increase the risk of neurodegenerative diseases, including CTE. The studies were conducted in rats, so further work is needed before human applications. Psilocybin is already being investigated as a treatment for depression, PTSD and anorexia.
