Gamma-ray burst GRB 250704B may have preceded magnetar formation

The Einstein Probe satellite was observing the same patch of sky when a short gamma-ray burst GRB 250704B lasting approximately 0.4 seconds was recorded on 4 July 2025. Such events are associated with the merging of compact objects, such as neutron stars. Observations in the soft X-ray range suggest that the result of the merger may have been a magnetar — an extremely strongly magnetized neutron star.
