Ancestors of Native Americans arrived at peak of ice age, study suggests

A new genetic study published in Current Opinion in Genetics & Development suggests that ancestors of modern Native Americans reached the continent no earlier than 21,000 years ago—near the end of the Last Glacial Maximum, the coldest period of the last ice age. The authors, archaeologist Bethany Potter and biological anthropologist Savannah Hay from the University of Kansas, note that earlier migrations by other groups may also have occurred. Scholars have debated the timing of first settlement of the Americas for over a century.
