Viking treasure from Gotland: 1,100 years underground, discovered in 1999
In 1999, the largest known Viking treasure was discovered on the Spillings farm on the Swedish island of Gotland. The hoard, hidden over 1,100 years ago, contains thousands of early medieval coins and silver jewellery. Gotland, situated in the Baltic and covering just under 3,150 km², was an important Viking trading centre in the Middle Ages.
