Most accurate atomic clock ever built may redefine the second

Scientists have built the most precise atomic clock in history, based on vibrations of lutetium atoms. The device is accurate to 19 decimal places, a 41% improvement over the previous record holder. Results were published on September 23 in Nature. The clock may prompt the International Bureau of Weights and Measures to redefine the second, whose current definition based on cesium has been in place since 1968.
