Ramesses II declared victory at Kadesh, though Egypt was on the brink of defeat
The battle of Kadesh in 1274 BCE between Ramesses II's Egypt and the Hittites ended differently than pharaonic propaganda claimed. Ramesses was caught off guard by Hittite forces and briefly faced mortal danger. He nonetheless ordered his alleged victory commemorated on the walls of five temples. In reality, the battle ended in a draw and ultimately led to a peace treaty.
