Malaysia deports 1,500 Myanmar citizens despite UN and human rights warnings
Malaysia began Wednesday returning approximately 1,500 Myanmar citizens to the war-torn country — the first of five groups totaling 5,000 people that the Kuala Lumpur government calls "voluntary" repatriates from detention centers. The UN and human rights organizations warn that deportations may expose migrants and refugees to persecution. The operation occurs amid growing anti-immigrant sentiment in Malaysia.
