Eurozone inflation surge surprises, ECB may raise rates

September preliminary data showed inflation higher than forecast in major eurozone economies: Germany rose to 3.3% (from 2.9%), France to 3.4% (from 2.6%), Italy to 4.1% (from 3.2%), and Spain to 5% (from 4.6%). Energy prices, driven by Middle East conflict, are the main driver. Higher readings increase the likelihood of another rate hike by the European Central Bank, further burdening governments already facing the highest debt servicing costs since the 2012 crisis.
