Medieval underfloor heating discovered beneath Basel monastery

During renovation work on Petersgraben in Basel, workers found walls and floors of the former Gnadental monastery. Beneath one floor lay an exceptionally well-preserved medieval central heating system, likely used to heat the refectory. It is a unique discovery in Switzerland and one of the most significant of its kind in Europe.
