U.S. consumer optimism plummets: index hits 81.9 points

The Conference Board consumer confidence index fell in July to 81.9 points — down 6.7 points from the previous reading and well below the forecast of 89. The mood deterioration stems from growing fears of price increases and job losses. This is one of the weakest results in a long time.
