Greenland and Antarctica lost 11.3 trillion tons of ice in 44 years

An international research team led by Inès N. Otosa from Northumbria University analyzed the largest satellite data collection in history — data from 27 missions and 42 assessments. Between 1979 and 2023, Greenland and Antarctica together lost approximately 11.3 trillion tons of ice. This caused sea levels to rise by 31.4 mm. For Greenland, the analysis includes data going back to 1972.
