Couples therapist: silence and sarcasm are forms of relationship abuse
Piotr Mosak, a couples therapist, describes how to recognize when a relationship exists only as a facade — the mind effectively filters out uncomfortable facts, hindering clear assessment of the situation. Punishing a partner with silence, sulking or withdrawal of affection creates unhealthy hierarchy, and humiliation disguised as a joke he compares to a hole cut in clothing — irreversible. He also warns against entering a relationship from a "rescuer" position, wanting to fix a partner's addictions — such an approach most often ends in frustration for both sides.
