Breast cancer overdiagnosis by mammography: risk below 5%, not 50%

A new analysis of eight major randomized screening trials shows mammography leads to far lower breast cancer overdiagnosis than previously believed. After accounting for differences in follow-up time and screening frequency, results point to an overdiagnosis rate below 5%, not the earlier estimate of 30–50%. This represents a significant shift in assessing risks linked to mammography.
