Lead in ink helped read charred scrolls from 2,000 years ago

Scientists discovered that trace amounts of lead in ancient ink make writing visible inside charred papyri in X-ray scans. This technique may enable reading of lost Greek and Roman texts preserved by the eruption of Vesuvius nearly 2,000 years ago. The discovery opens new possibilities for studying collections from Herculaneum.
