NASA satellite photo shows open water 60 km from North Pole

A NASA satellite captured on August 29 vast expanses of open water less than 60 kilometers from the North Pole — instead of solid ice cover, numerous ice floes separated by water channels are visible. Prof. Julienne Stroeve of University College London assessed that the scale of ice gaps is exceptionally large, though a similar phenomenon was observed in September 2016. Scientists note that the image does not yet indicate record-poor conditions for Arctic sea ice.
