Middle class in US struggles to pay rent on time: one in five tenants affected

According to a 2025 Urban Institute report, one in five renters in the US said they were unable to pay their full rent on time at least once. Problems with timely rent payments are no longer exclusive to the poorest—increasingly they affect the middle class too. The phenomenon threatens the idea of the "American dream" and deepens social inequality.
