Planet Elias 2-24 b, less than a million years old, challenges formation models

Astronomers have discovered planet Elias 2-24 b, which is less than a million years old and the youngest known planet. The previous record holders — planets around stars PDS 70 and WISPIT 2 — are over 5 million years old. Prof. Lucas Cieza from Instituto de Estudios Astrofísicos in Chile, a co-author of the study, notes that the discovery shows even the best planet formation models overlook important processes.
