El Niño could cause 451,000 additional heat-related deaths

Scientists predict that from June 2026 to February 2027, the El Niño phenomenon could cause as many as 451,000 additional deaths from extreme heat compared to a typical year. Research indicates particular risk for countries in Africa and Asia. Rising temperatures linked to El Niño could drastically exceed previous mortality projections.
