Alessandro Cagliostro, one of 18th-century Europe's most famous swindlers from humble origins, managed to gain entry to high society and preyed on dreams of eternal youth and alchemical gold. In 1780 he visited Warsaw, where he caused considerable uproar. There, however, he encountered a Polish magnate who exposed him.
