What Do the Numbers on Fruit and Vegetable Stickers Mean? It's the PLU Code

Apples, bananas, citrus fruits and avocados often display a four- or five-digit PLU code. In retail trade it serves to identify fresh fruits and vegetables — indicating the species, variety and growing method. Codes beginning with 9 denote an organic product, and those beginning with 8 a genetically modified one.
