Stanford scientists observe quantum sound jumps for first time

Stanford researchers recorded in real time quantum jumps of phonons—individual units of sound—leaping between energy states. This is the first such observation in history. The discovery may have applications in quantum computing, error correction, ultrasensitive biological sensors, and next-generation acoustic devices.
