Dolphin Bubbles first marine mammal documented as kleptoparasite
Bubbles, a bottlenose dolphin living on the Great Barrier Reef off Lady Elliot Island, became the first marine mammal scientifically documented as a kleptoparasite. The dolphin chases fish not to eat them but forces them to regurgitate swallowed food, which it then eats. Kleptoparasitism—stealing food from another animal—is known in many species but had not been described in cetaceans until now. Bubbles' behavior fills this gap in scientific knowledge.
