Wrocław Tech: gut bacteria produce proteins resembling Alzheimer's amyloids
Researchers at Wrocław University of Technology found that bacteria living in the human gut can produce proteins structurally similar to amyloid fibers that accumulate in the brain in Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. Results suggest the gut may play a role in initiating neurodegenerative diseases. Parkinson's involves accumulation of alpha-synuclein; Alzheimer's involves beta-amyloid 1-42 peptide and tau protein.
