California bans passing AI data center costs to residents
Governor Gavin Newsom signed seven laws regulating energy and water consumption by AI data centers in California. The law requires the Public Utilities Commission to establish a separate tariff for data centers and mandates that they pay for infrastructure expansion—not ordinary ratepayers.
