British discovery of oil in Iran became a curse for Persians

In the 19th century Iran, then called Persia, became the arena for rivalry between Britain and tsarist Russia. Corrupt shahs of the Qajar dynasty sold natural resource extraction concessions to both powers. When the British discovered petroleum, instead of prosperity it brought Iranians exploitation and loss of control over their own wealth.
