Merz's CDU fails to enter parliament in German state for first time

Chancellor Friedrich Merz's CDU suffered a historic defeat in elections to the parliament of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, winning only 4.9 percent of votes and failing for the first time since the founding of West Germany to cross the election threshold in any German state. The result may seriously weaken Merz's position domestically.
