Merz after CDU defeat in state elections: populists offer easy solutions that don't exist
Chancellor Friedrich Merz acknowledged that state election results—far-right parties winning in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and a disastrous CDU performance—are partly his fault. He assured, however, that he does not intend to resign or abandon the CDU/SPD coalition's reforms. Merz warned that right-wing and left-wing extremists propose simple recipes—cheap electricity from Russian gas or expropriation of businesses—that are impossible to implement.
