Asgard archaea reveal the secret of eukaryotic cell origins
Scientists cultured and studied Asgard archaea — microbes whose ancestors lived about 2 billion years ago. They show a dynamic cellular skeleton and flexible appendages, previously thought exclusive to advanced life forms. The discovery helps reconstruct endosymbiosis, when a primordial archaeon engulfed bacteria that created mitochondria — a key step in eukaryotic cell evolution.
