Iron-60 in Antarctic ice reveals Solar System's journey 80,000 years ago

Astrophysicists discovered traces of radioactive iron-60 (Fe-60) isotope from ancient supernova explosions in deep Antarctic ice layers. Results published in "Physical Review Letters" show this isotope's deposition on Earth fluctuated significantly over recent tens of thousands of years. These fluctuations directly record the Solar System's entry into the Local Interstellar Cloud (LIC) approximately 80,000 years ago.
