Scientists discover hidden intestinal defect explaining Crohn's disease relapses
Researchers analyzed around 900 human intestinal biopsies and found that intestinal cells can remain in a heightened state of readiness for death even when a patient with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) feels well and is in remission. This "smoldering" molecular defect may drive future disease flare-ups. The discovery opens the door to new therapies targeting this mechanism.
