NASA discovers 222-meter crater from lunar impact in spring 2024
The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter discovered a new crater on the Moon, 222 meters in diameter and 43 meters deep. It formed in spring 2024 after an asteroid or comet fragment struck, with blast force comparable to the Hiroshima bomb. The trace was found a year and a half after the event during routine photo analysis — the impact itself was not observed in real time.
