Russians on Mickiewicz: from enthusiasm to attacks

In the 19th century, Russian press compared Adam Mickiewicz to Byron and enthusiastically embraced his work. Over time, attitudes toward the Polish poet changed — attacks and campaigns against him emerged. Russian-language editions of his works appeared, and one commentator wrote that "soon the time will come when we will be learning Polish."
