Cancelled flight: when compensation is due and when it is not

Passengers are entitled to compensation for a cancelled or delayed flight only if the airline is at fault. If the cause is so-called extraordinary circumstances — such as extreme weather conditions or a strike by airport staff — the airline may refuse to pay. It is worth purchasing travel insurance, which covers costs even in situations excluded by EU regulations.
