Rembrandt and public autopsy: the story of "The Anatomy Lesson"

On January 16, 1632, a 28-year-old repeat offender named Aris Kindt was hanged in Amsterdam. The same day, the city's surgeon's guild conducted a public autopsy of his body — an event that drew crowds of citizens. Among the observers was young Rembrandt, who captured the scene in his famous painting "The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp".
