Why Anders sent Poles to Monte Cassino and what it cost
The Battle of Monte Cassino began on 17 January 1944 and lasted four months – it was one of the most difficult battles for the Allies on the western front. General Anders decided on the participation of the 2nd Polish Corps in its final phase, although the decision had been made much earlier. The Germans fiercely defended the Gustav Line, and the Poles paid a high price in human lives for breaking through it.
