Houthis seize strategic Perim Island in Bab al-Mandab Strait
Yemeni Houthis took control of the volcanic Perim Island in the narrowest point of the Bab al-Mandab Strait, one of the world's key shipping routes through which Saudi Arabia exports oil. Forces aligned with the UN-backed government in Aden abandoned the island without fighting, marking another setback after losing the port of Mocha on Thursday. The seizure by Iran-aligned Houthis significantly expands their control over this strategic strait.
