Psilocybin protects neurons from chemotherapy side effects
Researchers at MD Anderson Cancer Center found that psilocybin — the active substance in hallucinogenic mushrooms — given before chemotherapy effectively prevents painful peripheral neuropathy. Tests on mice and human tissue showed it protects neurons by securing mitochondrial transport. This is the first potential prophylaxis in history for this cancer complication that does not reduce treatment effectiveness.
