21.9 million-year-old eruption in Chile explains Andes growth rate
Researchers at University College London analyzed a giant layer of volcanic rock from the Lauca caldera in northern Chile from 21.9 million years ago — results published in Science Advances. The landscape, preserved like Pompeii, allowed precise determination of the Andes' growth rate, settling a long-standing dispute between the theory of slow, steady uplift and the theory of rapid acceleration 6–10 million years ago. Previous methods relied only on point analyses of mineral chemistry.
