CERN detects anomalous gluon behavior inside atomic nuclei

Physicists at CERN, using the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, measured particle production with unprecedented spatial resolution — reaching about one quarter of a proton's diameter. At the smallest scales, they observed a surprising decline in J/ particle production that conventional "nuclear shadowing" theory cannot explain. The discovery may change our understanding of gluon behavior deep within atomic nuclei.
