US diesel price tops $6 per gallon for first time

U.S. diesel has crossed $6 per gallon for the first time.

Prices have nearly doubled from their year-ago level.

Tight global supplies and depleted U.S. inventories are driving the surge.

There are plenty of ways rising fuel prices can sting, but diesel has an especially long reach. It powers the trucks hauling cars, the equipment building roads, the tractors working fields, and a sizable chunk of the machinery that keeps America’s supply chain moving. Now, for the first time, the national average price of diesel has crossed the $6-per-gallon mark.

GasBuddy reported Thursday that the U.S. average topped $6 a gallon, while AAA’s national tracker shown above puts it at an even more painful $6.0556. That’s up from $5.9773 yesterday, $5.85 a week ago, and $5.3213 a month ago. Perhaps the most startling comparison is with last year. Diesel averaged just $3.7053 per gallon at this point in 2025. At today’s AAA figure, that’s an increase of roughly 63% in a year. And there’s a bigger problem here than what it costs to fill a pickup.

The spike comes amid major disruption to global oil and refined-product markets. Crude prices have climbed sharply, while diesel supplies have been squeezed by reduced Middle Eastern supply, disruptions to Russian refining and exports, and lower Chinese fuel exports. The U.S. isn’t sitting on a particularly comfortable cushion, either.

The Energy Information Administration says American distillate inventories, which include diesel, have already fallen below their normal five-year range. Its latest forecast expects inventories to drop below 100 million barrels in September and remain below the five-year low through the end of 2026 and much of 2027. This is an issue that goes beyond just the pump, too.

Virtually everything that spends time aboard a diesel-powered truck becomes more expensive to move. Agriculture, construction, shipping, and other diesel-heavy industries face the same pressure, potentially feeding those fuel costs downstream to consumers. That’s going to be tough in the short term but for now, the EIA forecasts a dip in the diesel average to $5.55 per gallon in the fourth quarter and then to around $4.40 in 2027.

Whether that comes to pass, we’ll have to wait and see. For now, the reality is that diesel has entered territory America has never seen before. And unlike a sports car that demands premium , this is one fuel bill that has a habit of finding its way into everyone else’s wallet.
