NEC ends quantum hardware work after nearly 30 years of research

Japanese conglomerate NEC concluded work on physical quantum computers based on superconducting circuits and qubits after almost three decades of research. The company will now focus on quantum applications, abandoning costly development of its own hardware. Some engineers, including a senior researcher, moved to rival firm Fujitsu. NEC held the world's top semiconductor sales position in 1990.
