Library of Ashurbanipal in Nineveh: 30,000 tablets discovered from 2,500 years ago
Nineveh was the main capital of the Assyrian empire for nearly a hundred years. King Ashurbanipal assembled there a library of over 30,000 clay tablets covered in cuneiform script. In 612 BCE the city was conquered and destroyed, and the collection waited to be discovered for over 2,500 years. Archaeologists reached it in the palaces of Assyrian rulers.
