Physicists examine quantum wave behavior during free fall

A team led by Ron Folman of Ben-Gurion University, with Nobel laureate Roger Penrose, built an interferometer that for the first time allowed measurement of free fall's effect on an atom's quantum wave property. The atom simultaneously had two possible paths — one in free fall, another at rest — both ending at the same place and time. The experiment addresses one of physics' oldest unsolved problems: reconciling quantum mechanics with Einstein's general theory of relativity.
