Nanolaser on chip could cut computer energy use in half

Scientists created an ultramall nanolaser that would enable data transmission in microprocessors using light instead of electricity. Thousands of such lasers could fit on a single chip, potentially cutting energy consumption by around half, researchers say. The technology opens prospects for more efficient data centers, smartphones, and medical sensors.
