Rivers deliver more microplastics to seas than previously thought

New research published in Nature shows that rivers transport significantly larger quantities of microplastics to oceans than previously estimated. Heavy rainfall combined with poor waste management causes sharp spikes in pollution. Intense downpours flush plastic from landfills and streets, multiplying the load reaching the seas.
