Lasker Award for orexin discovery: how narcoleptic dogs changed science

Masashi Yanagisawa and Emmanuel Mignot received the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research for discovering the role of orexin — a brain chemical responsible for maintaining wakefulness. Yanagisawa found it while studying brain receptors; Mignot discovered it studying narcolepsy in dogs, including his own chihuahua named Watson. Both published their findings independently in 1999. The discovery explained the mechanism of narcolepsy: the absence of orexin prevents the brain from maintaining wakefulness.
