First physical evidence of nose amputation as punishment in ancient China

Archaeologists discovered remains of a woman at a cemetery in central China who survived extensive facial mutilation. Healed bones suggest the injury was not the cause of death but an intentional punitive nose amputation. The practice is mentioned in early Chinese texts, but physical evidence of its use has been lacking until now.
