Mehmed II claimed himself heir to Roman Empire after conquering Constantinople

On May 29, 1453, Sultan Mehmed II conquered Constantinople and from that moment considered himself the rightful successor to the ancient Roman emperors. Roger Crowley describes the Ottoman ruler's resulting conquest plans in his book "Sea Empires".
