Bougainville moves toward independence as PNG sets vote date on secession

The autonomous region of Bougainville may soon take another step toward independence. In October, the government of Papua New Guinea and regional authorities are to set a date for a parliamentary vote on the results of a 2019 referendum, in which 97.7 percent of residents voted for secession. A positive vote would open the way to creating a new nation on the world map.
